  1. Welcome to the Adobe Acrobat CD Sampler 
  2.  
  3. This Read Me file contains installation instructions and product
  4. information for the Acrobat Reader program. The On-line Guides
  5. (Acrobat Reader Help) also provides essential information to help
  6. you begin using Acrobat Reader 2.0. 
  7.  
  8. Adobe Acrobat 2.0 users may use the WELCOME.PDF and TOC.PDF 
  9. files on this CD-ROM. These files include cross-document links, 
  10. a new feature in Acrobat 2.0. Cross document links provide a means 
  11. of opening additional documents to aid in accessing information.
  12.  
  13. A searchable, full-text index of all of the PDF files on this CD-ROM has
  14. been included and is accessible to Adobe Acrobat 2.0 users. When creating 
  15. the index, the Word Stemming and Sounds Like options were disabled to 
  16. allow easier use with multiple language files. To take advantage of this 
  17. index and other features of Adobe Acrobat 2.0, fax the coupon contained 
  18. in the AcroCoup.pdf file on this CD-ROM.

  20. Adobe Acrobat 1.0 users may view and print either of these files, but 
  21. will not be able to utilize the cross document links. Cross document
  22. links are features of Adobe Acrobat 2.0 products. Acrobat 1.0 software 
  23. users may print the TOC.PDF file. This file contains document descriptions,
  24. as well as path names for the content on this CD. A few PDF files have been
  25. secured (such as printing disabled) with the new Acrobat 2.0 security
  26. feature.  With Acrobat Reader 1.0, these documents can be opened but 
  27. appear as blank pages.

  29. You must have Acrobat software installed on your computer to make use of 
  30. the Portable Document Format [PDF] files on this CD-ROM.

  32. Follow the instructions below to install the Adobe Acrobat Reader software.

  35. INSTALLING ACROBAT READER
  36. ===========================
  37. WINDOWS:
  38. - To install Acrobat Reader 2.0 on your hard drive, from the Windows
  39. Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu; type
  40. [drive]:\acro_v2\english\acrowin\acroread.exe
  41. - Follow the instructions on your screen.
  42. - If you are using a network-based copy of Windows, see the instructions
  43.  below.
  44.  
  45. MACINTOSH:
  46. ***Acrobat Reader 2.0r3 addresses installation issues related to different 
  47. versions of Adobe Type Manager by updating any existing system-level 
  48. ATM older than version 3.8.1***
  49.  
  50. - To install Acrobat Reader 2.0 on your hard drive, double click 
  51. on the file called "AcroRead.mac" in CD_SAMPLER:ACRO_V2:ENGLISH:ACROMAC
  52. - Follow the instructions on your screen.
  53. - Installation requires approximately 3 MB of free space on the 
  54. active drive.
  55.  
  56. - If no version of system-level Adobe Type Manager is present on 
  57. your system at the time of installation, ATM LE (a special version 
  58. of Adobe Type Manager 3.8.1) is installed with Acrobat Reader 2.0 for 
  59. use by Acrobat only. ATM LE is placed in the Fonts folder within the 
  60. Adobe Acrobat 2.0 folder. The ATM Font Database is installed at the 
  61. root level of the System folder. 
  62. - If ATM LE is removed after installation, Acrobat Reader 2.0 requires 
  63. ATM version 3.6 or above, not included, to be installed.
  64. - Acrobat Reader 2.0r3 addresses installation issues related to 
  65. different versions of Adobe Type Manager by updating most existing 
  66. system-level ATM older than version 3.8.1. It will not update ATM GX 
  67. (ATM 3.7), ATM 3.5.1J or ATM 3.8 (on Power Macintosh, Kanji, or active 
  68. QuickDraw GX systems) -- see next item. 
  69. - Please note that to enable Acrobat Reader 2.0 and ATM LE to fit on 
  70. a single floppy, ATM LE does not include support for QuickDraw GX, 
  71. Kanji, or 68000-based Macintoshes, and does not have native Power Macintosh 
  72. code for improved performance on Power Macintoshes like the full version 
  73. of ATM 3.8.1 (which is included with Acrobat Exchange 2.0). Please call 
  74. one of the Technical Support numbers listed below for information on an 
  75. upgrade to ATM 3.8.1 or Acrobat Exchange 2.0. 
  76. - Acrobat Reader 2.0 is not compatible with QuickDraw GX. You will need 
  77. to disable the ATM GX control panel and the QuickDraw GX extension. 
  78. You can use Extensions Manager from the Control Panel to do this, or 
  79. remove these files from their locations.
  80. - ATM LE allocates approximately 576K of RAM from Multi-Finder memory 
  81. when it is initialized by Acrobat Reader. If Virtual memory is on, 
  82. ATM LE cannot use Multi-Finder memory, so an additional 576K memory must be 
  83. allocated to Acrobat Reader.

  85. DOS:
  86. - To install Acrobat Reader 1.0 on your hard drive, make the CD-ROM
  87. the default drive. Then type:
  88.    cd ACRO_V1\ACRODOS and press Enter
  89. Type INSTALL and press Enter
  90. - Follow the instructions on your screen.
  91.  
  92. UNIX:
  93. - Become superuser (root).
  94. - SunOS 4.1.3: If you haven't already done so, mount the CD-ROM:
  95.    mkdir /cdrom
  96.    mount -rt hsfs /dev/sr0 /cdrom
  97.    cd /cdrom/acro_v1/acrounix/acroread
  98.    ls
  99. - For more detailed instructions, print out the Getting
  100. Started Guide from the file getstart.ps
  101. - Solaris 2.3: the volume name is "CD_SAMPLER", not "adobe"
  102. as listed in the Getting Started Guide (getstart.ps)
  103. - run the installation script by typing:
  104. ./easyinst.rdr 
  105. to accept the default installation, or
  106. ./install.rdr for a custom installation.

  139. To take full advantage of the benefits of electronic documents, you
  140. can get more information about Acrobat, Acrobat Pro, or Acrobat for 
  141. Workgroups by faxing the coupon contained in AcroCoup.pdf file on this CD.

  191. Details on the terms of use for the Acrobat Reader products are
  192. found in the Adobe Systems Incorporated Electronic End User License
  193. Agreement that is installed with each product.

  201. YOU MAY REDISTRIBUTE ACROBAT READER 2.0. 
  202. IF YOU WISH TO REDISTRIBUTE ACROBAT READER 1.0,
  203. YOU MUST SIGN A LICENSE WITH ADOBE.

  205. TO DISTRIBUTE ACROBAT READER 2.0:
  206. You may make unlimited copies of the Acrobat Reader 2.0 software
  207. (for Macintosh or Windows platforms) and give copies to other persons
  208. or entities as long as the copies contain the Electronic End User
  209. License Agreement and the same copyright and other proprietary
  210. notices that appear on or in the Software.

  212. TO DISTRIBUTE ACROBAT READER 1.0:
  213. If you wish to give copies of Acrobat Reader 1.0 software (for DOS
  214. and UNIX platforms) to others, you must sign a license with Adobe
  215. Systems and agree to report quarterly the number of copies you 
  216. distribute. There is no fee. To receive a license application, call
  217. one of the telephone numbers listed in the Technical Support section above.

  219. INSTALLING ACROBAT READER FOR WINDOWS ON COMPUTERS THAT SHARE A 
  220. NETWORK-BASED COPY OF WINDOWS
  221. Installing Acrobat Reader 2.0 on computers that share a network-based
  222. copy of Windows is a two step process. First, from a computer that 
  223. shares the network-based copy of Windows, you install the administrator's
  224. version of Acrobat Exchange or Reader. Then, other users who share the
  225. same copy of Windows install the standard version of Acrobat Reader. If
  226. you have Acrobat Exchange 2.0, follow the instructions on the "Network
  227. Installation" card included with Acrobat 2.0. If not, follow the
  228. directions below:

  230. To install the first copy of Acrobat Reader on a computer that 
  231. uses a network-based copy of Windows:
  232. 1. Make sure that nobody is using the copy of Windows you will use to
  233.    install Acrobat Reader.
  234. 2. Start Windows. If Windows is running quit all applications.
  235. 3. From the Windows Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu; type
  236.    [drive]:\acro_v2\english\acrowin\acroread.exe /a and press Enter. 
  237.    (The /a switch indicates that you are installing an administrator's version.)
  238. 4. Follow the instructions on your screen.

  240. After you install the administrator's version of Acrobat Exchange or Reader, 
  241. other users can follow the standard installation instructions to install 
  242. Acrobat Reader on computers that share the same copy of Windows.
